Investigators say they have recovered flight data recorders that
might offer some clue into why a Continental commuter flight
crashed in New York State, killing 49 people on board and one
man on the ground.

調査隊は、何故コンチネンタル航空の定期便がニューヨーク州で墜落し、
49人の乗員と地上にいた一人の男を亡くすことになったのか
何かの手がかりになるかもしれないフライトレコーダーを
発見したと報告しています。

☆ 今日の注目ポイント
investigateは調査すると言う意味ですが
inspectも日本語にすると『調査する』のような感じですね。
inspectの方は「spect」に「見る」という意味があるので、
検視官が調査しているような感覚の調査だと分かったりします。
こういった語根を覚えるのも、似たような意味の単語を区別するのに
効果的ですが、やはり文の中で使われているのを実際に何度も見るのも
大切です。実践でどう使われているのか学んでいきましょう！
recoverに関しては英英辞書で場面別に6つぐらい意味があります。
「re-cover」ということで再び-欠けたところを覆う
といったイメージです。
commuterのcommuteは動詞でよく通勤するといった意味で使われます。
ただし、今回のようにもともと同じところを
行き来すると言った意味があります。
